Leila
Ghaznavi presents Beyond the
Light
Tickets: $10, http://fringearts.ticketleap.com/beyond-the-light/

more info: www.panteaproductions.com
Creator of last year's sold out show, Silken Veils, Leila Ghaznavi returns with Beyond the Light, an elegant hybridization of dance, puppetry, shadow work, aerial acrobatics, lighting effects, all set to the poetry of Walt Whitman and Emma Lazarus. Ghaznavi blends these media to create an epic journey of a soul that is torn in two, seeking to reunite itself. Through multiple 'reincarnation cycles', each set to a unique musical score, these two halves evolve through varying scales/styles of puppetry and dance, culminating with an aerial acrobatic dance of longing that guides these two halves together again. Beyond the Light is sure to captivate the senses. "Stunning!" claimed Jane Henson of the Jim Henson Foundation.
When asked about her inspirations for the piece, Ghaznavi replied, “I wanted to create a piece of raw beauty where love and light are magical. Because this piece moves in cycles, I wanted every aspect of the piece to be transformative. As a result the performer and their body constantly shift between being a character in the piece, a puppet, or a platform for performance. This piece has no set. Instead light is used to bring the characters together or to tear them apart again. It is a mimic for the unknown forces in our own lives, that coincidental meeting that reveals the love of your life, or that pain of somehow ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time and having something precious destroyed. Like life, in this work, what happens in the darkness, and what happens Beyond the Light, is just as important as what is seen.”

Group Motion and Olive Prince
Dance present Juncture
TICKETS,
$24 general admission / $12 students, seniors and DancePASS
Group Motion Company presents two revived works, "Visitors" (1993) and "Inroads" (1992), in honor and celebration of their 45th anniversary. Both of these works represent high points of the 90’s generation of the company, with "Inroads" being considered the signature piece of that time. The common ground or 'juncture' between the Group Motion works is that of traveling, and the archetypes of arrival and departure.
Olive Prince Dance will present her latest choreographic investigation, "twine", which premiered at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in February 2013 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Women’s Studies Program where OPD was commissioned to make site dance in the library of a chapel. Exploring the psychology of women in relation to internal power and the external gaze, "twine" explores the concepts of task, display, action, and the collective strength of women through dance.
"I Jumped Into Some Animal's Throat" is a new work, created and performed by Brigitta Herrmann, Group Motion co-founder and workshop co-director, about which she says: “voices and images waiting in the wings to be seen and heard, I defrost my refrigerated thoughts."
Dancers include Lindsay Browning, Patricia Dominguez, Eleanor Goudie-Averill, Leanne Grieger, Brigitta Herrmann, Elizabeth Reynolds, Emily Reynolds, Eiren Shuman, Caroline O'Brien, Guillermo Ortega Tanus, Olive Prince, Jennifer Rose, Marlena Weinberg, and Hedy Wyland.
Support for Juncture is provided by New Stages for Dance, which is a program of Dance/USA Philadelphia. Leadership support for the New Stages for Dance Initiative is provided by MetLife Foundation.

Samsāra is the soul’s journey through the cycle of
birth, death and reincarnation. Shibani Patnaik explores the
concept of Samsāra and themes related to the flow of life. While Shibani is
deeply rooted in tradition, she provides a unique perspective in her
individualistic style without sacrificing the core essence of classical Odissi

Orissa, dating back to the 2nd century BC. Odissi is well known for its

SAUDADE, The love that remains
Nicole Bindler and PIMA Group premiere new, experimental dance work featuring live, original music, visual art
and video that explores nostalgia, social anxiety and haunting fairy tales.
PIMA Group premieres a new performance work entitled Broken Wings, a solo dance performance choreographed and performed by Melisa Putz, set to live piano accompaniment composed and performed by Thomas Clark. Broken Wings is inspired by the rich tradition of fables that tell the stories of animals given human-like qualities and seek to pass on the message of a moral. Inspiration is also drawn from nursery rhymes, many of which speak of morbid connections to historical events, such as ring around the rosie and its telling of deaths during The Plague.
Nicole
Bindler premieres two dances: I Think Not, choreographed
by Judson era luminary Deborah Hay, adapted and performed by Bindler, and Pia Mater, a large group work including a cast of 20 performers, with
set design by Ana
Hernandez. I Think Not is an intimate solo performed in the round.
Click here for video excerpt. Pia
Mater, Latin for tender mother, is the anatomical name for the innermost
layer of connective tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Pia
Mater is inspired by both the anatomical image and the idea of a tender
mother. Five musician/composers perform live original music on traditional and
newly invented instruments; they perform alongside the dancers and their
presence is felt as a part of the choreography. Pia Mater contains
moments of sublime beauty and also moments of extreme awkwardness. Click here for 2007 video excerpt.

New Works by the SHMD 2011-12 Choreographers Project
Bronwen MacArthur ~ Gabrielle Revlock ~ Raphael Xavier
Tickets: $15; $10 for DancePass holders, seniors and students with ID
Influenced by the 48 Hour Film and Theater Projects, "48 Hours" at SHMD was adapted to the Choreographers Project by alumna Devynn Emory to challenge residents to explore new ways of creating dance. Each choreographer assembles a "mission package" – a specific set of directions for a short work – to be created over 48 hours. By random drawing, each choreographer then chooses two other residents to create and present the work. Choreographers do not perform their own mission packages. The experiment pushes the residents to confront and explore specific boundaries guided by their own artistic visions.

Gabrielle Revlock’s “SHARE” is one droll take on a contemporary generation’s obsession with sharing personal biography and its impediments to intimacy. Through highly original dance moves, pattern, set and musical score, Revlock has created a dance/performance work of refreshing delight performed by Revlock, Gregory Holt and Bonnie Friel.
Set around an enormous elephant costume, Lionel Popkin’s quartet “There Is An Elephant In This Dance” looks at issues of how a singular body can house multiple histories and the difficulty of aligning oneself with a single cultural identity. Choreographer/performer Lionel Popkin, will be joined by “Bessie” Award winning dancer Carolyn Hall and the inimitable Ishmael Houston-Jones, all slyly interrupted by a local guest dancer Zornitsa Stoyanova, set to an original score by Robert Een. See a review here.

8 Choreographers, 8 Dancers,
One Word
From the very beginning when the first words were uttered, the ability to
communicate has played an important role in our world. Whether within our own
thoughts, spoken or written, words have the power to transform the
world we live in. Love, laughter, heroism, friendship, and virtually
every emotion we feel as human beings can be inspired by words.
Unfortunately, fear, anger, and hatred, can also be invoked. Language is
at its best when used to inspire others to find the best in
themselves. For this performance, 8 choreographers and 8 dancers create new movement based on a single word with the power to transform.

Indigenous Pitch Dance Collective Presents:
Double Dance Feature
Curt Haworth's "Either/Or" and Vince Johnson/illReality Theatre's "Drunken Monkey"
Indigenous Pitch Dance Collective’s upcoming show, featuring the work of Curt Haworth and Vince Johnson/illReality Theatre, is a mesmerizing experience of dynamic dance and eclectic music played through a milieu of existential twist and absurdist trips.
"Either/Or" is an absurdist romp set to deconstructed text by Søren Kierkegaard and Samuel Beckett with music by Tim Motzer. The performers Bethany Bender, Leanne Grieger, John Luna, William Robinson, Annie Wilson, Zachery Svoboda along with the Indigenous Pitch Dance Collective: Genevieve Adams, Rachel Condello, Amaryah Ferry, Christine Herrman, move with athleticism mixed with sequential momentum and gesture.
"Drunken Monkey" is the mystically wicked alter ego of Vince Johnson and the illReality theatre crew. Five nomadic warrior monks make up the Drunken Monkey Clan: Knuggle Buckets Brown (Vince Johnson), Meow Hallelujah (Christine Gerena), Suave Electricity (Edwin Lopez), and the Mmm Yeah Dragon Whisperers (Brandon Shockley/guitar and Nezih Antakli/percussion). The clan takes audiences through a fantastical journey driven by pulsing dance, martial arts and music.
